Hindustan Aeronautics Limited has achieved a significant milestone in its civil aviation strategy with the successful first flight of the Dhruv New Generation (NG) multi-role helicopter. The maiden flight took place on December 30, 2025, at the company\u2019s helicopter division in Bengaluru and represents a decisive step in HAL\u2019s ambition to expand beyond the military sector into the global civil helicopter market. The flight was preceded by an official inauguration ceremony attended by India\u2019s Minister of Civil Aviation, Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu. The Dhruv NG is the latest evolution of the long-running Advanced Light Helicopter Dhruv program and builds on decades of operational experience while introducing features tailored to civil certification requirements.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The Dhruv NG is a twin-engine, multi-role helicopter designed to operate in the demanding conditions of India\u2019s challenging geography, while meeting the certification and performance requirements of the international civil aviation market. HAL is positioning the helicopter for a wide range of missions, including passenger and VIP transport, emergency medical services (EMS), law enforcement, disaster relief, and search-and-rescue (SAR) operations.<\/p>

From a technical perspective, the aircraft is powered by two Shakti 1H1C turboshaft engines and features a civil-certified glass cockpit equipped with modern avionics aimed at enhancing situational awareness. Safety has been a key focus of the design, with crashworthy seating, self-sealing fuel tanks, and the redundancy provided by a twin-engine configuration during critical phases of flight.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

According to data released by HAL, the Dhruv NG has a maximum takeoff weight of just over 12,000 pounds, a maximum speed of approximately 154 knots, and a range of around 340 nautical miles, including a 20-minute fuel reserve. Endurance is estimated at about three hours and 40 minutes, while the service ceiling of approximately 18,000 feet enables effective high-altitude operations. The helicopter can carry an internal payload of roughly 2,200 pounds.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Minister Naidu highlighted the growth potential of India\u2019s civil helicopter sector, stating that the country\u2019s helicopter fleet could exceed 1,000 aircraft over the next 10 to 15 years. He also pointed to recent policy changes under the UDAN 5.1 regional connectivity scheme, which extend viability gap funding to helicopter operations in order to reduce passenger costs on short-haul routes.<\/p>\n

HAL Chairman and Managing Director D.K. Sunil said full civil certification of the Dhruv NG is expected in the coming months. Before certification is granted, the company plans to conduct approximately 130 test flights using two prototype aircraft. In parallel, eight Dhruv NG helicopters are already planned to be deployed by Pawan Hans for logistics missions supporting offshore oil and gas operations at the Bombay High field.
